A few tips for how to make your Zion National Park Adventure Session extra special, featuring Roxanne & Mitch’s Couple Portraits at Zion.
Like so many couples in 2020, Roxanne & Mitch’s wedding plans took an unexpected turn when covid hit. They had planned to elope in the Grand Tetons at the end of May 2020, and while we stayed optimistic for a while, eventually there was nothing for it but to find an alternative. This beautiful couple took it in their stride though and opted to have a sweet wedding ceremony in their hometown of Miami, Florida. Later on, when travel was easier, they met me for a really special Zion National Park Adventure Session.
ZION NATIONAL PARK ADVENTURE SESSION
Zion National Park Adventure Session
It’s not hard to tell why Zion National Park is world famous. From the towering sandstone cliffs to the deep red slot canyons, you can feel both on top of the world and like you’re the only people around for miles. Neither Roxanne nor Mitch had been to Zion National Park before (well, Mitch went once when he was much younger), which meant they were able to discover the epic scenery together.
We started their Zion National Park Adventure Session at sunrise, along one of the classic trails in Zion, Canyon Overlook. Of course, the trailhead is one of Zion’s most famous spots, but the hike itself shouldn’t be discounted either! It’s an easy hike with truly spectacular views. We took our time on the way back, making the most of all the beautiful scenery. From there, we headed to a slot canyon that’s one of my favorite spots in Zion.
Couples Portraits at Zion
Roxanne & Mitch weren’t able to have the elopement they’d originally planned, so they were determined to make their Couple Portraits at Zion really special. They spent a week in the area and were able to spend a lot of time exploring the park ahead of our adventure session. On the day, Roxanne arrived wearing the most beautiful, sparkly Gatsby gown and Mitch had a tux. They both looked amazing and their clothes created a magical contrast between them and the rugged red rocks of Zion. They then changed into more casual clothes for the slot canyon, where they relaxed with a couple of beers and just made the most of their time together.
How to Make the Most of your Zion Adventure Session
Of course, Zion National Park is a really popular spot for Adventure Sessions. This means it can get crowded! Not only that, but there are a lot of trails to choose from. So, I’ve put together a few tips for How to Make the Most of your Zion Adventure Session.
Plan for a sunrise session! The light is no doubt best at sunrise or sunset, but sunset tends to be a lot more crowded as not everyone is keen to get up before dawn! Trust me though, that early wake-up call is worth it, not just for the soft light, but also for the chance to really take in Zion without the crowds.
Hire a photographer who knows Zion National Park well, and who can help you plan your session. Personally, I love hiking during my spare time and I’m always on the lookout for new spots that I can share with my clients to help create an extra special experience.
Bring a Change of Clothes. Okay, so this isn’t super necessary, but it can be fun to mix it up! It will mean you get two different styles of photo from the one shoot, and it helps to slow down and give you a few moments just to be.
Take your time. Don’t be afraid to pause and just take it all in. The beauty of Zion National Park Adventure Sessions is that you’re there to explore as much as you’re there for the photos. There’s really no hurry! Not to mention, these moments of reflection pretty much always add another element to your photos.
Would you like to plan your very own Zion National Park Adventure Session? I’d love to come along for the adventure with you (and photograph it, of course!). Just get in touch!
