These rainy couple’s photos in Acadia are proof that wild weather won’t ruin your photos. Some sessions are fated to have crazy weather – and I want to tell you that’s okay! It’s true, those calm golden hours are ideal, but we can’t control the weather. So, if you’re worried about rain during your Acadia photo session, here are some tips and inspo to make the best of your couples photos in Acadia National Park.

Misty and Andrew’s rainy couple’s photos in Acadia

This session was simply destined for crazy weather. Misty and Andrew had actually planned to come the year before, but had to cancel their plans due to a hurricane shutting down the area. When they came back a year later, the hurricane was gone…but the stormy skies proved a persistent guest. The forecast showed fog and rain, with no way around it – right down to Misty’s name.

Determined to have fun no matter what, these two embraced it. The upside of wet weather is fewer people around, meaning you get a privacy and calmness that’s hard to find on sunny days. We met on Park Loop road that morning, which is normally the busiest spot in Acadia. We had the entire area to ourselves!

Next, we held our breath as we headed up to Cadillac mountain. Most of the time, if it’s stormy at the shoreline, it’s even worse up top on the mountain. Today was one of those days, but we got out anyway. Laughing the entire time, M&A shunned the wind and the rain and explored with enough time for a few photos. Below at the Jessup trail boardwalk, things were much calmer. With the protection of the trees, we enjoyed the damp fall colors arching the trail.

These two had about the toughest conditions imaginable, but look how beautiful the photos came out:

Lastly, if weather in the forecast looks dismal, it may not last long.

Conditions can change quickly. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see rare conditions like rainbows and cloud inversions – which can’t happen unless there is a bit of rain and overcast skies.

Windy, rainy couple’s photos in Acadia are a chance to get creative

That’s really how you make the most of rain during a shoot: embrace it. Find ways to have fun and let the moodiness of it become a feature, not a bug. Lean into the atmosphere of the soft, romantic light and drama of the wind and rain.

Shots can become more artistic, using more reflections from the wet ground, or beading rain drops on skin and clothes. Wind adds motion which feels whimsical in photos.

As long as you’re prepared with the right clothes, layers and a couple cute umbrellas, your shoot will be as fun and beautiful as any other.

10 tips for a rainy day shoot to get creative photos:

  1. Buy clear umbrellas. Not just to stay dry, but the clear top makes sure you get enough light on your face during photos.

  2. Bring lanterns. If it’s dark, a point of light in your photos adds range.

  3. Bring a change of clothes. If you are out in the rain, you’ll want to change at some point. This means you stay dry and warm, but also get to use different outfits.

  4. Have towels.

  5. Bring a blanket. This is to keep you warm and dry, but also to sit on if you don’t want your pants to get wet.

  6. Jump in some puddles! Turn off your adult brain and just play in the rain together.

  7. Have a dance off. You should do this anyway, but it also keeps you warm and gets you laughing.

  8. Take photos inside the car. If you’re waiting out a downpour, have a cuddle session in the car while you wait.

  9. Get in the water. If you’re wet anyway, why not kick around in the surf a bit?

  10. End with a Notebook style rain scene. At the end of the shoot once you’re wet anyway, spend 3 minutes kissing in the rain for super romantic photos.
