Virginia Couples Photography: this is the best location for Shenandoah engagement photos

While there are lots of easy access spots in the park, this is the best location for Shenandoah engagement photos. You can pull right off the road and then take a short hike to Hawksbill Mountain for sunset.

The accessibility and centrality of this location is why I think it’s the best location in Shenandoah National Park for any type of shorter photo session. You can stick to the pull offs along the road, or venture up the steep but short trail to Hawksbill Mountain. It’s the tallest point in the park and offers incredible views of both sunrise and sunset.

Below, I list all the different trailheads leading to the summit, as well as a number overlooks.

Easy access pull-offs and locations in Shenandoah for engagement photos

The main vein through the park is Skyline Drive. Along this road, there are a number of spots right off the road with scenic overlooks. This is ideal for shorter photo sessions in Shenandoah because you can get great views without hiking.

In the very center of the park is a concentration of overlooks leading up to Hawksbill Mountain, the highest point. There are more than listed below, but these are the most scenic and best for engagement photos:

Best location for Shenandoah engagement photos: Hawksbill Mountain Trails and the Summit

There are multiple trailheads leading up to the Hawksbill summit. Which one you take is a matter of preference (and where you find available parking). They are all about 1-2 miles long and take roughly 30-60 minutes. Just remember which overlook you parked at, since you could take the wrong trail down at some point!

Keep in mind that since this is such an easy hike, it’s very popular. Plan ahead for parking and avoid weekends if you can.

Shenandoah engagement photo session FAQs:

What is the best time of year for a Shenandoah engagement photo session?

Personally, I love fall the most at this location. September, October and even early November are great months for photos due to the fall foliage. Since this location is so far south, colors peak in late October and stick around through November.

What should we wear for engagement photos at these locations?

Wear something cute yet comfortable. You’ll be outdoors and moving around, so plan your outfit around that. If you want to hike up Hawksbill, wear sneakers or hiking boots. Remember, you can always hike first, then change at the top.

How can we avoid crowds during our session?

Avoid weekends and opt for times around sunrise and sunset. Most hikers come up midday.

What is the best way to get to these locations for photos in Shenandoah?

If you’re coming from the north or the DC area, you’ll want to come in from highway 211. If you’re coming from the south, like Charlottesville or Richmond, route 33 will lead you into the park.
